Sylvia Fletcher

Sylvia Fletcher, 95, passed away Saturday, March 15th, 2008 at the Galena
Nursing Center where she was a resident for the past five years.
She was born July 12, 1912, to Howard and Margaret (Griffith-Frie) Frizzell.
Sylvia was one of twelve children. As a young child she attended Enterprise
School, northwest of Carl Junction. Sylvia attended Joplin High School while
caring for the children of Mr. & Mrs. Bob Finley.
Sylvia married Galen C. Fletcher on June 21, 1930. They were married for 65
years before Galen passed away in October of 1995. They spent their entire
married life working on the family farm in rural Cherokee County Kansas.
Sylvia spent 17 years as the head cook at Spencer Elementary School. She loved
cooking but her true passion was the Lord. She was a member of Smithfield
Christian Church since 1948 and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. The
Lord blessed her with the talent of writing poems, many of which have been
published. She also spent much time caring for many children.
Sylvia is survived by her son Howard D. Fletcher & wife Lois; and daughter
Norma J. Thomas. Eight grandchildren: Gail Kennedy and husband Bob, Carl
Junction; Doug Fletcher and wife Yvonne, Riverton; Russ Fletcher and wife Lisa,
Joplin; Clint Fletcher and wife Mari, Galena; Curt Fletcher, Miami; Mariann York
and husband Jerry, Claudia Cox and husband Marion and Joyce Willers all of Carl
Junction. 17 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. She is also
survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family. Sylvia is preceded in
death by her brothers and sisters and son-in-law O. H. Perry Thomas, Jr.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday March 18th at Smithfield Christian Church
with Doug Fletcher, Lee Williams and Robert Lewis officiating. Visitation will
be Monday evening from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. at Smithfield Christian Church. Burial
will be at The Mound Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Smithfield
Christian Church. Arrangements by the Simpson Funeral Home in Columbus, KS.
