Victor John Winter

Victor John Winter, 53, of Warrensburg, Mo., formerly of Columbus, passed away
Sunday, January 28 at his home from an apparent heart attack. Vic was born June
11, 1953 the son of Jack and Maryanne Winter. He attended Columbus schools,
graduating from Columbus High School in the Class of 1971. He attended Kansas
State University where he received a degree in Journalism.
He enjoyed a long and decorated career as a newspaper photographer and photo
editor of the Kansas City Star. He was the founder of StarGarden Foundation, an
organization dedicated to astronomical outreach. His passion for astronomy
brought him to all corners of the globe to photograph the sky. He was the owner
of ICSTARS Astronomy and Day Star Filters. He was a JPL Nasa Solar System
Ambassador, past editor of the Astronomical League Reflector Magazine, a
decorated member of and former president of the Astronomical Society of Kansas
City.
He leaves behind him, the light of his life, his beloved three year old
daughter, Shadow Lynn Winter, his wife Jennifer and two step-daughters, Libby
and Aerica. He also leaves two brothers, Mark Winter of Columbus and Dan Winter,
he leaves two nieces, Michelle Grenier of Leawood, Ks., and Lindsay Winter of
Wichita, Ks, a great-niece and a great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his
parents.
The family will receive friends and celebrate his life Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
at the Simpson Funeral Home in Columbus. A memorial service will be held on
Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. at the Sweeny-Phillips Funeral Home, 617 N. MacGuire
in Warrensburg, Mo. The family is asking in lieu of flowers, for donations to be
made to the StarGarden Foundation or the Shadow Lynn Winter Education Fund. At
Vic's request his body has been cremated.
