LEONARD McGUIRE
25 March 1925 — 4 September 2003

Leonard McGuire, of rural Miami, Ok. formerly of Columbus, Ks. passed away the 4th of September, 2003 at the Higher Call Nursing Home, Quapaw, Ok. Following an extended illness. He was born to E.L. and Ethel (Roser) McGuire on March 25, 1925. He was a Presbyterian and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1942. He served 4 years in the United States Army under the command of General Patton. He attended Pittsburg State University where he received a B.S. and M.S. Degree. He received five National Science Foundation Scholarships to further his education. He taught science for nine years in Longton, Kansas, and for 29 years at the Cherokee County Rural High School. Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing, and raising cattle. He worked summers at the Columbus Co-op. He was a 50 year Mason.

He and Olive Hanshaw were married on December 26, 1945. His survivors include the wife of 54 years. Daughters Micheal and her husband James Seufert of Oak Grove, Mo., and Patricia and her husband Clarence Gibson of Miami, Ok. He is also survived by two brothers Bill McGuire of Stillwell, Kansas and Daniel McGuire of Springfield, Mo. four grandchildren—Amee Seufert, Jason Gibson, Mindy Scott, and Sheila Warrington and seven great-grandchildren Byrce and Natalie Gibson, Drew and Mackenzie Scott and Brooke, Bailey and Laney Warrington. He is also survived by 3 nieces and 5 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Winnifred Smutz, Olive Emigh, and Virginia Detlefson.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2003 at the Simpson Funeral Home in Columbus, Kansas with the Reverend Dennis Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Girard City Cemetery Girard, Kansas. Pallbearers will be Marvin Wahl, Jason Gibson, Luke Warrington, Christian Scott, Michael Joe Ferraro and Delbert Rowden. Honorary Pallbearers will be Richard Wheatly, Tom Grant, Dee Holmes, Sam Sullivan, Don Suterland, and Wes Wright. Graveside Military Rites will be preformed by the American Legion Post 147 Funeral Detail of Miami, Ok. A memorial has been set up in Mr. McGuire's name to either Higher Call Nursing Center Residence Fund in Quapaw, Ok. or to the Integrus Hospice in Miami, Ok. and these may be sent to or left at the Simpson Funeral Home 323 S. Kansas Columbus, Kansas 66725.
